The structural nature of this state-sanctioned killing of Black people is underscored by the refusal of official sources to even collect and publish this information. ![]() These too must be named and spoken to end the silence and end the violence.įatal Encounters, a volunteer-maintained national database of people killed during interactions with police, documents at least 4,896 Black people killed since 2000. The list of names below, more complete than anything available a few years ago, is missing many names. Efforts by journalists and the public in recent years have begun to shine a light on the long-masked actual numbers of Black lives taken by police. Comprehensively documenting the murder of Black lives by police has not only not been a priority, it has been impossible. Until recently there was no comprehensive national database collecting all police killings, making it possible to break them down by race. A Washington Post investigation found that the FBI undercounts fatal police shootings by more than half because reporting by police departments is voluntary. Since the year 2000, nearly 5,000 identified Black men, women and children have been killed in fatal encounters with police across the United States.
